Roulette Rules

Let’s start with how to play roulette for beginners. The first thing that will draw your attention is obviously the roulette wheel. On a classic European roulette, there are 37 numbers, from 1-36, plus a 0. You will notice that the numbers are not in order. The only consequence exists by color, red and black, except the part where you can see the green zero. The dealer who spins the wheel is called a “croupier” in a land-based casino.

Note that the spin of the ball is in the opposite direction of the wheel. These facts might not be that important for now, but you will understand later their significance. On the table, there is a board with all the existing bets that you can choose. Each bet has a different payout which we will analyze later. For the moment, we are going to explain the procedure of the game, which is basically 3 simple steps:

Step 1 → Players place their bets

Players put their chips on the box (numbers, color, etc) they want to bet. If you are playing in a land-based casino, the dealer will set the time limit left for betting by saying “lasts bets please” where you have 3-5 seconds left, and “no more bets” when betting is finished. Oh the other hand, in roulette online there is a countdown timer at the center of your screen.

Step 2 → The dealer spins the ball

In both land-based casinos, and online live roulette tables you have the option to bet during the start of the spin, but in RNG games the bets have to be placed before the spin.

Step 3 → The outcome

When the ball lands on a number, the dealer takes away all the lost bets and keeps the winning ones. Then he starts paying the players who won. The payout is determined by the type of bet and its payout. Of course, in online roulette, this procedure is done automatically in a second!

How roulette pays out

In this section, you will see all the types of bets available, the roulette odds and their payouts. We need to mention that we use the European version of roulette which is the most popular one, in both land-based and online casinos. Any differences in other roulettes will be mentioned in the following section.

Special bets in roulette

Except for the basic bets above, there are some special bets some players love to bet on, especially the “old school” players. These bets were created based on their position on the wheel:

  • Voisins du Zero:

Includes the numbers: 22, 18 ,29 ,7 ,28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25
Probability → 45.9%

  • Tier:

Includes the numbers: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 και 33
Probability → 32.4%

  • Orphelins:

Includes the numbers: 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9
Probability → 21.6%

Why should you choose online roulette?

If you are wondering whether you should start playing online roulette or not, the answer is clearly YES. Some years ago someone might have said that you can’t find the realism and this appealing atmosphere of a land-based casino, nowhere online. Nowadays, this argument would never stand, since all online casinos offer live roulette, live blackjack, etc.

These are the main reasons why you should play online roulette:

✔️ Online roulette is available to anyone with an internet connection and a pc/tablet/phone.

✔️ There is no crowd, no traffic, no smoke, and no annoying players.

✔️ You can play from the comfort of your home wearing only your perfume.

✔️ There are no transportation costs like gas etc.

✔️ You can play as long as you want. Stop anytime and start again whenever you like.

✔️ There are dozens of roulette tables for every bankroll. You can bet even 0.20 euros.

✔️ All online casinos offer free roulette. You can have fun with play money, or even try different systems and strategies and see if they actually work with no risk whatsoever.

Live roulette games

As we mentioned before, there are many roulette variations especially online. The most popular ones are European roulette, American roulette, and the french roulette. There are separate articles for each one, however, we think that it is crucial to be able to distinguish them as a new player and choose the one that favors you the most from the very beginning.

  • European Roulette

By far the most popular roulette not only in land-based casinos but online as well. This explains the fact that most of the roulette variations are based on its roulette rules and payouts. The house edge is 2.70% which is one of the lowest you can find worldwide.

  • American Roulette

On the other side of the world, the dominant version is obviously the American roulette. However, if you play online there is no reason to choose it. No, let me rephrase that: You are stupid if you play American roulette! Let me explain why, before you get offended:

On the American wheel, there is another added segment with a double zero 00 which is green as well. So, considering the fact that the payouts remain the same, instead of having 1/37 odds of winning a number, you have 1/38, and still, the return to the player is 35:1! With that being said, the house edge in the American roulette is doubled at 5.26%! Give us a reason to play there, and we will give you a bonus!

  • French Roulette

Last but not least, we have French Roulette. Clearly the best roulette you can find! Firstly, the felt on the table is different. It has a solid color and you can distinguish the number’s color only on the wheel. Also, the bets on the felt are differently placed. However, these are not the most important differences. There are two rules that clearly favor the players and in both cases, the house edge is 1.35% which is the best deal you can get for a roulette game!

👉 The “la partage” rule: this rule applies only for 50-50 bets like red/black, 1-18/19-36, even/odd. When the ball lands on zero 0 and the player has bet in one of the above bets, he receives back half of his initial wager. For example, if he has bet $100 on black, and zero comes, he gets back $50 and loses the other $50.

👉 The “en prison” rule: once again, this rule applies only for 50-50 bets. In this, the more rare, case if the ball lands on zero, the lost bet is not taken and remains in place. On the next spin, if the bet is won, it is returned to the player with no winnings. If the bet is lost, the dealer takes it.

The conclusion is that if you like betting on roulette red or black, high/low numbers, or even/odd, and you want to increase your odds of winning when playing in an online casino, definitely look for a french roulette and play with only 1.35% house edge!

The history of roulette

Roulette is the oldest casino game and its story goes way way back. More specifically, it was around 1700 in Europe when it first appeared as a game of luck. The fact that its invention was totally random, surely makes the story much more interesting. According to the most popular version of the story, the famous mathematician Blaise Pascal was trying to invent a perpetual motion machine. Even if his experiment failed, Pascal in fact became a legend as the inventor of the most popular casino game in history!

The initial version of the roulette had no “Zero” and remained unchanged for many decades. In 1842, King’s Charles III kingdom has many financial problems, so he decided to build a casino in Monte Carlo and bring gambling to the masses. In order to increase the house edge, Francois and Lois Blanc designed a Roulette wheel with a single zero on it. Finally, the fact that gambling was prohibited in the rest of France, Monte Carlo became the Mekka of gambling and roulette the most popular game in the world!
